New year, new me, right?
You have no idea how much I abhor cheesy subject lines like the one above. My coworkers can attest to my equal distain for email campaigns with the worst, I mean best, subject lines possible. I subscribe to several major retailers partially because I am a mother so that means online shopping for the win! But also because they have some of the best content writers in the game and I like to stay on top of mine. Their one liners keep me sane and laughing through any work day, so why not?
But jokes aside, do they catch your eye? Do creative ways to grasp your attention, your desire to transform, your disgust for how much cheese and chocolate you consumed over the past two weeks make you want to seriously evaluate your approach to overall wellness? If it doesn't, please keep reading.
For me, the answer is a big fat no. I don't believe in resolutions. In fact, I haven't made any in at least five years. They are a complete and utter waste of breath and time. This isn't because I don't have personal goals for myself. I most certainly do. I just believe that resolutions are meant to be broken. Weight loss, financial freedom, wellness, a new career, a deepened sense of faith, a new found self or relationship should be part of everyone's strides and not just on December 31. My personal goals shouldn't benefit someone's bottom line so why make them in order to fall back halfway through February?
Not everyone who desires any amount of change is successful at it. From my own experiences, this is how I have found making lasting change happens:
1. Meditate on it.
When Garrett and I were in the midst of fertility treatments, a female pastor friend of mine flew up from California and spoke at a nearby church. I made time to connect with her after she spoke and shared with her what at taken place in our lives. I shared about the hurt, the miscarriage, the brokenness, the bitterness, and how I was even a few days late at that time, but totally unwilling to believe it could be anything more. She spoke the word "sustain" over me and I swear to you, I wrote that on a post it note that night and had it by our bathroom mirror for the next year until Ezra was born. What I am saying is, make whatever you are meditating on visible. Make it your screensaver. Put it in a cute picture frame by your desk. Pray for it. Do something to make it part of you. The more you make it part of your every day thoughts and prayer life, the more likely you will see God bring it to fruition.
2. Find an accountability partner.
This one is hard for me, but I am putting it out here because I need accountability to keep an accountability partner! Don't go it alone. No one joins a gym and then says, "This is all me. I don't need anyone to help me get to where I want to be." Well, they do. And then they injure themselves or are often found terminating their health club membership in the first 90 days. Surround yourself with experts in your desired field of outcome. Ask to spend time with them. Ask them to help keep you accountable towards your goals. This is a sure way to see serious change in at least who you consider your inner circle of influencers.
3. Make it part of your daily life.
Our family has really gotten into a more holistic approach to wellness this past year. Along with making some drastic changes to our diet like removing gluten and dairy, I have also made a conscious effort at eliminating toxins from our home. This includes cleaning sprays, bathroom disinfectants, room sprays and anything that lists "fragrance" on the bottle which has given me the worst migraines in the past. I couldn't knowingly change what I was putting inside my body in terms of diet without changing what we were breathing in and using towards health and wellness in our home. We made essential oils part of our life and haven't looked back. The same goes for you. Your changes, no matter the size, should be implemented in your daily life. Trying to drink more water? Invest in a few great Hydro Flasks for your car, work and home. Track your consumption. Repeat.
I hope you have some incredible goals for yourself in 2018. I know I do! I have some big goals towards wellness, career, and personal development that I plan on sticking to. But believe me, it doesn't happen over night. Write them out, seek an accountability partner and incorporate them in your daily life.
